One of the must-have labels, the British luxury goods and clothing company Mulberry is going from strength to strength, with accessories making the lion’s share of profitability. The company has been expanding its American market over the last year and also here at home, with a new store opened in Glasgow last year and also at the new Terminal 5 at London Heathrow Airport (to add to its presence at Terminals 1 and 4).
It has also been announced that a new store is planned for the majestic Victorian Quarter in Leeds later on this year, adding yet more competition to the likes of Harvey Nicks, but what a treat to this increasingly important retail city in Northern England.
Mulberry have also recently exploited the trend for specialist men’s shops, by launching their first menswear store in London’s Covent Garden. Full of expected ‘male’ items, one product that may surprise you is ‘The Bob Bag’. An unlikely designer he may be, but ‘The Bob Bag’ has been designed for Mulberry by Sir Bob Geldof, and it isn’t bad actually! It is a luxury travel bag and comes in two colours – black and dove grey.
Launched in 1971 by Roger Saul and his mother Joan, using the £500 Roger had received as a 21st birthday present as start-up capital, Mulberry was based in Shepton Mallet the quiet Somerset town where they lived, and truly represented the quintessential English way of life of days gone by. The company is now no longer family owned as Roger sold that last of his stake in Mulberry in 2003.
Mulberry is fast becoming THE top seller of handbags – certainly in the UK.
