A classic ‘English’ bag, from the renowned Aquascutum brand, this large fabric bag just shouts style, elegance and quality.
Aquascutum was created in 1851 by John Emary, a tailor who had a quality menswear shop in London’s Regent Street. In 1853 he developed the first waterproof wool which he patented and used to create fabrics which became the mainstay of his collections. Those of you who studied latin at school, will have already made the connection – ‘Aquascutum‘ is latin for ‘watershield’, hence John Emary’s renaming of his company to Aquascutum.
The Aquascutum hard wearing fabric was used to great effect for the coats worn by British officers during the Crimean War, and later all ranks were afforded such trenchcoats in the two World Wars. As well as the military, the British Royal Family have shared a long patronage of the company, starting with the then Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward VII) in 1897 when he purchased a coat made in the Prince of Wales check. At the same time, the first Royal Warrant was awarded the company – the last one being in 1952 from the late Queen Mother.
Other famous wearers of Aquascutum have included Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart, Prince Rainer of Monaco, and the very British Sir Winston Churchill, Baroness Thatcher and Sir Michael Caine.
This gorgeous bag can be carried by hand using the short carry handles, or used as a shoulder bag by the detachable shoulder strap. The straps, base and finishing edges are made from tan coloured nappa leather, whilst the rest of the bag is made from check fabric.
