It is hard to believe that one of the UK’s most recognisable brands Radley, was founded in 1998 by the current Creative Director Lowell Harder. So embedded into the bag and luggage market, Radley seems a much older company than that.
Favoured by the likes of celebrities such as Natasha Beddingfield and Lily Cole, the brand had its roots in London’s Camden Market. It was from here in 1984 that Lowell Harder a trained architect, set up a leather bag and suitcase stall under the brand name of Hidesign. Taking her inspiration from ethnically produced leather goods that combined different ways of working with materials, colours and embroidery, she created bags that soon caught the eye of an increasingly expanding clientele, and also some leading retailers. With investment form the Tula brand, Lowell was able to expand and later evolved into Radley.
The most distinctive feature of a Radley bag is the little Scottie dog that can be found on each one, yet it was a later edition and not found on the early Radley bags. Originally crafted from leather to match the bag, the Radley dog can now also be found in enamel and other materials. Not only on the bags but also on the expanding range of accessories which includes purses, umbrellas and scarves.
